GVM Upgrades Gold Coast

Most dual cab utes run out of legal payload long before they run out of space. A bull bar, winch, canopy, drawers, water and two people can put a ute over its rated gross vehicle mass, which can affect your insurance and roadworthiness. A GVM upgrade raises that rating with an engineered suspension package and the paperwork to prove it.

Upgrades are cheapest before first registration, and many models can also be upgraded after registration with certification and a modification plate. We weigh up what you carry and tow, recommend the right kit and handle the compliance.

GVM is the most your ute can legally weigh, loaded.

Gross Vehicle Mass is the vehicle plus everything in it: people, fuel, bar, canopy, drawers, water, gear and the weight of the trailer on the towball. A touring dual cab can be over before it leaves the driveway. Over GVM means you're unroadworthy, and it can put your insurance at risk. A GVM upgrade fits an engineered spring and shock kit, then certifies the higher limit.

Before or after registration

On a new vehicle not yet registered, the kit is fitted under the kit maker's federal Second Stage Manufacturer approval and a compliance plate goes on, valid Australia wide. On a registered vehicle, Queensland requires certification by an accredited Approved Person (LS15 inspection, using a kit with an LS11 design certificate), and a modification plate is fitted. We handle both. Buying new? Upgrade before rego.

GCM is separate

A GVM upgrade does not raise your Gross Combination Mass, the limit for the ute plus the trailer or van. Federal approvals can't raise GCM, and while Queensland introduced code LS16 in 2023, approvals are not yet practically available. Talk to us about towing before you buy.

Upgrade ratings by vehicle

New GVM in kg from each supplier's own pages. *The highest DMW ratings (4250 kg Ranger and HiLux, 4499 kg LandCruiser) need load rated tyres and extra parts, including a new rear diff housing, chromoly axles and a brake booster upgrade on the 70 Series. Tough Dog and Outback Armour kits: RRP on request + fitment and certification (excl. freight).

Tough Dog: Australian researched foam cell shocks in matched kits, ADR35 braking tested; Tough Dog recommends 300 kg or more of constant payload.
