A tent on the canopyCamp at duskPlatform and tent on a HiLux
Pull into camp, open the tent and the bed is already made. A rooftop tent keeps you up off the sand, the mud and the ants, and leaves the tub and the back seat free for the fridge, the water and the gear.
We fit Raxar and Alu-Cab rooftop tents, and the Rhino-Rack brackets that hold them, to roof racks, platforms and ute canopies at our Miami workshop. Choosing the tent is the easy part. The real job is making sure your roof, your rack and the mounts can carry it, both on the highway and parked at camp.
Rooftop tents we fit
Raxar quotes about 30 seconds to set up its tents, which use an extruded aluminium A-frame and come with a built-in 270 awning. Alu-Cab's Gen 3-R pops up on gas struts. Each card shows the part number and the maker's RRP for the tent itself.
The weight your roof can carry while the vehicle is moving. Every bump, corrugation, hard brake and corner adds force on top of the weight itself, so this is the lower number and the one that limits what goes on the roof for the drive. The tent, the rack and anything strapped to them all count.
Static load: parked at camp
The weight the roof can hold while the vehicle is parked. With no driving forces it is a much higher number, which is how a roof that carries a tent on the highway can also hold that tent with people asleep in it.
Alu-Cab's own figures for its RT-4S tent show how big the gap can be: 50 kg closed dynamic against 200 kg closed static. Size the tent and rack to the dynamic figure for driving, and the static figure for the tent with people in it at camp.

We check before we fit
We check your vehicle's dynamic roof rating and your rack's rating before we fit, and we count the rack's own weight as well as the tent. If the numbers don't work, we tell you up front and look at a lighter tent, a different rack or a canopy mount instead.

Roof rack, platform or canopy?
A tent needs a rated base under it. On a wagon that means load bars or a flat platform on the roof. On a ute you have a second option: mount the tent on the canopy, which keeps the cabin roof clear and puts the weight over the tub. Either way, the base has to suit the tent's footprint and mounting system. Alu-Cab recommends three 1450 mm load bars for the RT-4S, while Rhino-Rack's bracket kit lets you take a tent off a Pioneer platform when you don't need it.
Racks and canopies carry their own ratings. For example, the TrailMax roof rack for the Next Gen Ranger (104260) is rated 110 kg dynamic and 320 kg static, the Alu-Cab Contour canopy 200 kg dynamic and 400 kg static, and the Maxliner Venture Gen 2 canopy 150 kg dynamic and 350 kg static. TrailMax notes the vehicle maker's roof limit still applies even when the rack is rated higher.
Prices are each maker's published RRP for the part, checked 21 October 2026, plus fitment (excl. freight). Prices on request are quoted for your vehicle. Ask for your fitted price and we text it to you within one business day.
The weight counts twice
A rooftop tent adds to your roof load and to your payload. With a bull bar, canopy, drawers, fridge and water already on board, the tent can be the item that pushes a touring ute over its GVM. Run your build through the GVM weight checker first, and see GVM upgrades if you are close to the limit.
Finish the camp
A tent is one part of a touring setup. Our camping and touring page covers awnings, hot showers and camp extras, all fitted in the same visit.

Questions we get asked
Can my roof carry a rooftop tent?
It depends on three ratings: your vehicle's roof, your rack or canopy, and the tent mounts. The lowest of them is the one that applies. We check your vehicle's dynamic roof rating and your rack's rating before we fit, and we count the rack's own weight as well as the tent.
What is the difference between dynamic and static roof load?
Dynamic load is what the roof can carry while you drive, with bumps, braking and cornering adding force. Static load is what it can hold while parked, so it is the higher number. Alu-Cab lists its RT-4S at 50 kg closed dynamic and 200 kg closed static, which shows how big the gap can be.
How heavy is a rooftop tent?
Raxar lists its front entry tent at 81 kg and its side entry tent at 78 kg. Alu-Cab lists the Gen 3-R at about 76 kg without the mattress and ladder, and the RT-4S at about 127 kg with them. That weight comes off your payload as well as your roof load.
Do I need a roof rack or platform for a rooftop tent?
Yes. The tent bolts to load bars, a platform or a canopy roof rated for it. Alu-Cab recommends three 1450 mm load bars for the RT-4S, and Rhino-Rack's 61014 bracket kit mounts a tent to a Pioneer platform or Reconn-Deck so you can take it off when you don't need it.
Can I put a rooftop tent on a ute canopy?
Yes, if the canopy's static rating covers the tent plus the people in it, and its dynamic rating covers the tent while you drive. Alu-Cab rates its Contour canopy at 200 kg dynamic and 400 kg static, and Maxliner rates the Venture Gen 2 at 150 kg dynamic and 350 kg static.
